Phelan Runner-up at Brabazon
Kevin Phelan took the runner-up spot in the Brabazon Trophy at Walton Heath. With a total of 289 he finished just two strokes behind the overall winner Neil Raymond of Corhampton Golf Club.
The 26 year old from Hampshire made history by becoming the first player in over 20 years to win two Brabazons in-a-row and the first for over 50 years to hold the trophy on his own in successive years.
Phelan, who started the day two behind Raymond, needed a fast start but it eluded him as he double-bogeyed the par-four fourth to match Raymond’s front nine 37, while a couple of back nine birdies still couldn’t make up the difference.
“I had a lot of chances but I couldn’t get any momentum going,” he said. “Neil played well and deserved his victory.”
The six players selected by the Golfing Union of Ireland to compete in the Brabazon Trophy at Walton Heath Golf Club from 28 June - 1 July were: Paul Dunne (Greystones), Niall Gorey (Muskerry), Nicky Grant (Knock), Richard O'Donovan (Lucan), Kevin Phelan (Waterford Castle), Reeve Whitson (Mourne).
