Dunbar & McElroy Selected

Walker Cup star Alan Dunbar and fellow St Andrews Trophy squad member Dermot McElroy have been selected by the Golfing Union of Ireland to compete in the Irish Open at Royal Portrush next month.

The  pair were selected at the April meeting of the Irish Selection Committee  which also selected the Irish Squad to be entered in the Brabazon Trophy, which coincides with the Irish Open and had a closing date for entries of April 17th.

Dunbar and McElroy are joined in the field by two other amateurs, the North of Ireland Champion Patrick McCrudden, who is a member of Royal Portrush and the West of Ireland Champion Harry Diamond who received an invitation to compete in the event following his victory at Co Sligo Golf Club in April.

The four amateurs will warm up for the Irish Open at Royal Portrush next week as the Irish Close Championship gets underway on 25th May. The 72 hole stroke play event will be played over the same course the professionals will play in June, giving 144 of Ireland’s leading golfers the chance to become Irish Champion on one of Ireland’s great links courses.
