Ireland win Nations Cup
Ireland captured the Nations Cup in style at the Spanish Amateur Championship this week as Richard O'Donovan, Chris Selfridge and Reeve Whitson held off the hosts by two strokes, and the England team by four.
Having opened with a one under par 71, O'Donovan followed this up with a round of 74. Selfridge and Whitson both carded 75 on day one, with one of these discarded, and Whitson shot an impressive level par 73 on day two to give Ireland a 293 total.
The Ireland "B" team finished in 12th place.
Richard O'Donovan, Rory McNamara, Reeve Whitson and Dermot McElroy all qualified for the match play stages which get underway on Friday.
The six players selected by the Golfing Union of Ireland to compete in the Spanish Amateur Open Championship and Nations Cup at La Manga Golf Club from 27 February - 3 March are: Brian Casey (Headfort), Harry Diamond (Belvoir Park), Rory McNamara (Headfort), Richard O'Donovan (Lucan), Chris Selfridge (Moyola Park) and Reeve Whitson (Mourne).
