History made by BALLYMOTE GC in winning their 1st Provincial Pennant

08 September 2003

Ballymote Golf Club, Co. Sligo made history on Saturday last when in winning the Cecil Ewing Shield, they won the first Pennant in the Club's History.

Trailing 3-2 from the 1st Leg in Ballinrobe things did not look too rosy for the Sligo men when Ballinrobe made the scoreline 5-2 when winning the top and bottom matches 3/2 and 5/4 respectively.

Ballymote fought back to 5-4 when taking the 2nd and 3rd matches by 2/1 and 3/1 but were still in trouble as their paring of Ian Porter and Tony Ballintyne were 2 down with three to go. Three pars were good enough to draw the Match level and 5-5 and send proceedings to a playoff.

In the playoff the 1st hole proved enough as in the words of the Ballinrobe Team Captain, his Club snatched defeat from the jaws of Victory, when they were pin high, but bunkered in two with Ballymote over the back in four. Ballymote got up and down for 6, but unfourtunately the pressure got to the Ballinrobe pair and after a poor Bunker shot which nearly went out of Bounds, they were unable to get up and down in three, to send it to a second tie hole, losing the hole 6-7.

Ballymote are now the OK SUPPLIES LTD. Cecil Ewing Shield Champions of 2003.
