Palmer Cup 2012

Royal County Down Golf Club will be hosting the Palmer Cup from the 28th to 30th June 2012, ENTRY IS FREE and all spectators will be made welcome.

The Palmer Cup is an annual golf match initiated by Arnold Palmer in 1997 and played between the best college players of the U.S.A. and Europe respectively.

It is played alternately in the United States and Europe. All the players are at American colleges, the exception being one of the R&A’s golf bursars, normally a student in the U.K.

There are eight players on each team, and the match is played over three days.  On the first day, four fourball matches will be played in the morning and four foursomes matches in the afternoon.  On the second and third days, there will be eight singles matches on each day.

The standard of golf and quality of players is similar to the Walker Cup.  Recent U.S. Palmer Cup players include Ben Curtis, Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Matt Kuchar, Hunter Mahan, Webb Simpson, and Nick Watney.  Former European Palmer Cup players include Rhys Davies, Luke Donald, Michael Hoey, Peter Lawrie, Pablo Martin, Gareth Maybin, Graeme McDowell and Francesco Molinari.

Previous European venues for the Palmer Cup include the Old and New Courses, St. Andrews, Royal Liverpool, Doonbeg, Ballybunion, Prestwick, Glasgow Gailes and Royal Portrush.
